Welcome to the Heart of Virginia – Adventure Awaits!
There is only one year of my adult life that I have not resided in a rural locality, and I recall that one year feeling like a caged tiger in the circus. We spent that year in a small third floor apartment in a West-end suburb of Richmond, VA, partly because it was the only place that we could find to rent that would let me have my 255-pound Mastiff. The only pleasant thing I can remember from that one year was being able to hike the wooded trail at J. Sargeant Reynolds Community College across the road. Rural living is in my DNA as much as my ethnicity and my eye color. It is just a part of who I am.
People often assume that living in small rural town there is a lack of things to do. On the contrary! Not only is there plenty to do in a small rural town, there is plenty to do across every possible genre! And even better, no matter where you go or what you do, it is like one big family event as everyone knows one another. If you happen to run into someone you haven’t already met, you will quickly become friends as everyone talks to everyone else.
Since 1992, we have resided (mostly) in southside Virginia, in or around the town of Farmville, in Cumberland County (except for the one year mentioned above, and short stints in Montpelier, VA and Groton, VT – both still rural though). Right about now, you are probably asking yourself why Farmville sounds so familiar to you (the real deal Farmville is SO much more than a game in Facebook):
- It just hosted the 2016 Vice Presidential debate at Longwood
University in October 2016, and
- It is the first two college town in the US (Longwood University and Hampden-Sydney College).
I am SO looking forward to sharing my explorations around the town and region with you! We will be visiting Girls Night only destinations, Date Night locales, and family-friendly venues – you name it! You will be shocked and astounded with all we have to offer here in the heart of Virginia, you will want to move here with us (if so, I know a good realtor or builder I can introduce you to…).
If you are ready to explore all that southside Virginia has to offer, and just cannot wait for theses posts to start, check out my Pinterest board on Southside Virginia destinations. Also – if you need something to do this weekend, I highly recommend one of my FAVORITE seasonal events: the Shopping With a Cause Christmas Show at the STEPS building. SPOILER ALERT – They have the BEST. SANTA. EVER!
