Curry Clan Photos
My father, Bob Curry, owned his own business as a wedding photographer, which he did around his day job in education. Thus, he became the unofficial official family photographer as well. As such, I inadvertently have become the “Keeper of the Photos.” Seeing that my Dad was one of 18 children (my Dad being the baby and Gus being the eldest), there are ALOT of lineages to track within our clan! Here is an overview to the best of my recollection. I will keep updating this as I confirm information.
My grandparents, Michael Saba Curry and Mary (George) Saba Curry, came to the US from a region of Lebanon that, at the time of their immigration, was a part of Syria in the late 1800’s, eventually making their way to Johnstown, PA.
They, along with 12 other families, established St. Mary’s Antiochian
Orthodox Christian Church in Johnstown, PA. My grandfather, Father Michael, served as the Priest.
In 1976, the first organized family reunion was held at The Ridge in Johnstown, PA. Up until then, there were lots of unofficial gatherings when one of my aunts or uncles were visiting from out of town. Using a good old-fashioned phone tree, my Mom would call Aunt Grace [Gus’s wife], Aunt Gert [Tom’s wife], and probably Marylou [Fr. Alex’s daughter], to start to plan a get-together with all of our family within driving distance of my parent’s home in Elton, PA, along with assigning who would bring what food item, and the planning would begin.
My Mom, despite not being Lebanese/Syrian, was the one assigned all the mouthwatering ethnic delicacies, which I too have inherited!
This photo includes most the living Curry siblings in 1976 sister Genevieve “Jean” missing). Front row (left to right): Evelyn “Evy”, Rose Mary, Lillian “Lil”, Adele “Del”, Martha “Mar”, Elizabeth “Betty”, and Ruth [the eldest living at the time]. Back row (left to right): Robert “Bob”-my dad, Michael “Mike”, Raphael “Ray”, Wilber “Will”, Father Alexander “Fr. Alec” – followed in my grandfather’s footsteps and he too served as Priest at St. Mary’s, Anthony “Tom”, and Gus. Siblings that passed away prior to 1976 include: Rahme (died in infancy around 1900), Kathryn “Kay” (1901-1944), and Dorothy (1924-1967).
